The Society of Homeopaths Wins this Blog’s Gold Standard Award

The Society of Homeopaths in the United Kingdom has been at the forefront of modern homeopathy. Under increasing attacking by those who believe in bad science, the Society has taken the high road and insisted on quality responses and continues its role in helping to develop some of the world’s top homeopaths. From the Society of Homeopaths Web site:

Our vision is ‘homeopathy for all’ and we aim to achieve this both by supporting our membership and by raising the profile of homeopathy in general. The Society of Homeopaths is the largest organisation representing professional homeopaths in Europe with over 1500 members on its Register. Our members practice in accordance with The Society’s Code of Ethics and Practice and carry full public liability and indemnity insurance. Our Professional Conduct Department offers impartial assistance should difficulties arise between a patient and one of our members.

The Society of Homeopaths also sponsors conferences and seminars to upgrade the professional knowledge of its members. The Society of Homeopaths recently had Louis Klein FS Hom lecture in Oxford and also has had such important speakers as Rajan Sankaran and Jeremy Sherr.

Most importantly this organization is concerned about both the public and its members. It is important as a member of the public to support it since organizations like this prevent a monopolization of medicine by one interest group. Even if you aren’t into homeopathy, supporting this organization will continue to increase the level of health freedom and impart a message- the time for unquestioning belief in modern medicine’s safety and the conventional doctor’s ability to monitor the serious side effects of pharmaceutical drugs is over. The religion of conventional medicine is not in the public’s interest.

In one of the most bizarre things ever seen on the Internet there are actually individuals on the internet and blogs who are not even into homeopathy but spend inordinate amounts of time criticizing and “watching” the society. I would say its more like whining about the Society of Homeopaths and homeopathy in general.

They second guess everything a Society of Homeopath’s official says or does. You would think they would get a life. But they feel compelled to carry on the tradition of English bullying and absurdity. Hinkley, Gimpy et al. first complain that the Society is not strong enough and tough enough and then when the Society of Homeopaths actually take legal action against such vitriol, nastiness and unethical, illegal actions by a blogger these detractors complained it was too strong. Oh well, you can’t satisfy bizarre marginal members of society that talk ethics yet support such unethical actions.

  1. Hi I am pleased you have started blogging and hope you will accept comments from those who disagree with you. My thoughts on Louis Klein and Jeremy Sherr are already on my blog. Did you go to Louis Klein’s talk? Did he claim that autism could be cured?
My concerns about the SoH are that some sections of their code of ethics are routinely ignored. When this was pointed out, rather than deal with it, they attempted to silence debate. This is no way for a serious professional body to behave. Can I also correct a minor point, I am not English.

That’s really interesting – as far as I knew, the SoH had only got its lawyers involved as part of a dispute with one blogger. Are there other blogs/websites that they’ve taken action against? And, if so, could you provide more details and/or a couple of links? Thanks.

  3. Jonhw- I stand corrected.

Gimpy- Wow, even more bizarre. I see that you may be from Holland. But who really knows? You even have taken an English email address. Are you fascinated with all things English or what? You are following an English Society- what is your motivation?

I’m curious, what’s bizarre? Is it illegal or something for non-English people to live in England or have UK email addresses.

Your comment reminds me of Bill Bryson’s exchange with an Englishman who said to him, “…if you already have Woolworth stores and Kellogs Cornflakes, what brings you to England?”.
On the subject of homeopathy, can you give an incontrovertible example with references (including the mechanism by which it worked), as opposed to an anecdote with anecdotal references, of a non-self-limiting condition, ever having been cured by homeopathy? Just one will do. Many thanks.

  5. Gimpy is actually writing from a Holland IP address.

I enjoyed the quote though. I guess for Gimpy it would be a “shmoke and a pancake”.

As well, check out this new blog for the answer to your other question:

  6. PS I’m Scottish not Dutch, it is considered a faux pas to refer to a Scot as English.

  7. The crticism which led to the SoH legal action was hardly vitriolic. Dr Lewis even emailed the SoH to ask them their exact objections. He got no reply.

If you read gimpy’s blog and my own blog you will see that the SoH ignores quite serious breaches of its own Code of Ethics.

  8. Thanks Gimpy for letting me know about the positive web sites about Homeopathy.

I am a mom of four kids ranging in age from 10-30 years so you can see I have been very busy raising them these last many years. I am also a former registered nurse who discovered homeopathy 26 years ago to help my second born who was suffering from severe eczema.

To say that I have witnessed first hand the incredible benefits of homeopathy is an understatement. I have seen kids who were too young to know about placebo effect healed from ear infections and coup, as well as flues and fevers, allergies, a pilonidil cyst, extracted wisdom teeth needing no pain killers, bronchitis, pneumonia, to helping with their various emotional difficulties- sleep problems, temper tantrums, among others.

Because of my medical training, I carefully evaluated their responses to the remedy, and took them to my local GP for the serious infections. She was willing to “wait and watch” as long their was improvement. I am happy to report that none of the kids EVER needed to take antibiotics or even pain killers nor fever reducers- homeopathic remedies were effective They are all happy and productive young adults, and the youngest is doing well.

I, too, have experienced the wonder of a good remedy. There is nothing quite like the deep feeling of well-being and peace that occurs after taking a well- indicated remedy. I have weathered the storms of menopause and now at 55 years of age am fit, healthy, no menopausal symptoms, and feel excited about my life and the next many years ahead of me. I am saddened as I read ads for all the various drugs, and their potentially severe and sometimes fatal side effects that people have to take for conditions that homeopathy could help them with.

For the BadScience people, I feel that you are telling me that if I venture beyond the horizon that I will fall off the flat earth……..and imagine my knowing that in fact the Earth is a wonderful green-blue sphere spinning and whirling through space because I have seen it from above.
